International Women in Engineering Day

By Published on June 23, 2021

Engineering is not just a man’s world anymore and perception – along with demographics – is shifting. We, at Brüel & Kjær Vibro (B&K Vibro), are proudly part of the movement to bring awareness to women in engineering and inspire future generations.

As a leading global supplier of condition monitoring solutions for rotating machinery, our team consists of many inspiring female engineers. In observation of this year’s international women in engineering day, we have interviewed two inspiring women at B&K Vibro.

Meet Yuhong Wang, Software Developer for Condition Monitoring Systems at B&K Vibro

How or why did you choose engineering as a career path/area of study?

My parents are also engineers, which had an impact in my life to pursue a similar career. They always encouraged me to follow my passion of Engineering and I have never thought of it as a male profession.

What inspires you about Engineering?

Engineering allows me to encounter new challenges, like analyzing problems, developing new products,  and finding good solution for customers.  As a developer you also need to follow and learn new techniques. This is what I am really passionate about, it just never gets boring!

What challenges do women face in the Engineering professions/academia?

I think the biggest challenge is to find the right balance between my career and family. However, even on days when I feel exhausted, I enjoy both roles very much!

What is the most exciting thing about your job?

It is always so exciting to find the best solution for our softwares and continue to make improvements together with my colleagues. Good feedback from the customer`s side for the features or helpful support for improvement is what makes my job most enjoyable.

Why do you like working at B&K Vibro?

B&K Vibro is for me like my second family. I enjoy working with our global team and all the support we give to each other. B&K Vibro is a very international company, my colleagues come from countries around the whole world and the working atmosphere is great. Although I am a woman, I don’t feel any disadvantages, but instead very welcomed. I am proud to be a member of B&K Vibro and hope that our company will continue to develop and thrive.

What are your hopes for the future of Engineering?

I hope that we will continue to develop and adapt to new techniques and to provide customers with easier and more reliable products and solutions. I also hope that in the future more girls become interested and join the network of Engineers.

What would you say to girls in school/college who may be considering Engineering as a career choice/study option?

‘Interest’ is the most important motivation, not your gender. Engineering is not only a field for men. We, as women, can make significant differences as well and the world of Engineering needs us. Never doubt yourself!

Meet Melissa Bradley Hoenstine, Regional Sales Manager – Sales, New Business Development, Reliability at B&K Vibro

How or why did you choose Engineering and what inspired you?

I never studied to be an engineer but I have always been fascinated by technology, which at the time this field was dominated by men.

Early in my career, I worked for a global joint venture company that trained us in the principles of Edward Deming, which put high emphasis on quality with Total Quality Management or TQM. Those principles are still relevant today. In hindsight, reliability, safety, and maintenance best practices are a natural progression from TQM.

After I attended my first reliability conference – the Society of Maintenance and Reliability Professionals (SMRP) I was hooked. I was so affected by a Key Note Speaker, Gene Krantz. He wrote the book “Failure’s Not an Option” about the Apollo 13 space mission. He was the Director of Mission Control which saved the lives of the entire crew.  That’s when I knew this was exactly where I wanted to be.

From there on I immersed myself into the reliability community, read everything I could, joined professional communities and I spent the next three years attending many conferences such as SMRP & NORIA.

What challenges do women face in the Engineering professions/academia?

Once I decided this was my passion, I made the goal of becoming a Certified Maintenance and Reliability Professional (CMRP).  This is a certification typically reserved for men who either run plant maintenance and reliability or the guys who are out there taking the readings, analyzing data, and using the condition monitoring products to perform these duties.  50% of those who take the test the first time fail. As a 1) Strategic Salesperson 2) female, I was told by a few colleagues I would never pass this exam. So, I created a timeline with milestones and started my process to become certified.

My manager was very supportive during the process.  11 months later I earned my CMRP on the first try.  I felt I needed this certification if I wanted to be taken seriously in my day to day job with customers and to gain credibility with a few of my male coworkers that said I couldn’t do it.

What is the most exciting thing about your job?

I get to meet inspiring legends like Gene Krantz, Roger Penske, Ramesh Gulati, Terry O’Hanlon, and countless others that shape the way our customers can achieve continuous improvement in all facets of their business – safety, reliability, product quality, and TCO. I’m excited to be part of this team.

Why do you like working at B&K Vibro?

B&K Vibro is the first company I’ve worked for that is dedicated to Condition Monitoring as their core business. This puts me in direct contact with seasoned professionals and reliability opportunities every day. That’s a dream come true.
