Investigating Yaw Bearing System
B&K Vibro strategically places sensors on the key parts of your turbine as a part of our comprehensive monitoring strategy. The sensors we placed on the tower and the main bearing are what detected the yaw-bearing system fault.
Technicians looked into the Yaw Bearing System and replaced the Yaw Clamp Assemblies. The machine went back into operation, but months later, the condition monitoring system noticed the issue was coming back. This time technicians changed all the pre-tensioning spring packs. Vibrations returned to normal afterward. A few months later, the fault returned and technicians this time noticed the axial gliding bearing plates were damaged. The technicians re-machined the bearing plates and again changed the spring packs.
In each instance, condition monitoring was able to catch a developing fault and schedule maintenance. The developing faults never progressed to the point of critical failure, thanks to technicians and the monitoring tools in place. Having the right people and tools in place resulted in less unplanned downtime for the wind farm, meaning a better return on investment for the owner and fewer major problems for technicians.
