Performance Monitoring

Much of the turbo-machinery in the petrochemical and power industry is designed to pump liquids or compress or expand gases. These machines are monitored with vibration and process values like motors, generators and other machines, but in addition to this they are also performance monitored.

Performance monitoring determines how effectively the liquids or gases are being processed in the machine in relation to the expected performance level. Any performance reduction (e.g. reduced flow capacity or extra power consumption) is due to a process change, leaks or the result of the degraded condition of "wet components" of the machine such as the impeller, blades, volute or diffuser.

Performance monitoring detects deviations of the liquid or gas process in the machine based on automatic, continuous calculations of the thermodynamic functions for the particular liquid or gas being processed. These thermodynamic functions or parameters typically include:

  • Efficiency
  • Head
  • Compression ratio
  • Power

The performance parameters are calculated from non-proprietary thermodynamic formulas, using the liquid or gas temperature, pressure and flow for the intake and discharge as input. The calculated values are corrected to selected references or baselines for trend monitoring of deviations and visualization in performance maps. These values can also be correlated with other measurements such as vibration unbalance to more accurately identify the problem.
